From Prairie to Mountain – Neil Astle’s Modern Vision: Regional Architecture Rooted in Nature and Rationality traces the career of architect Neil Astle, whose inventive modernism emerged from the landscapes and cultures of the Great Plains and Mountain West.

The book presents Astle as a systems thinker who fused structural clarity, material honesty, and deep environmental sensitivity. Through houses, civic buildings, and institutional work, he developed a uniquely human-centered architectural language rooted in site and lived experience.

His mature projects—ranging from monasteries to wildlife visitors centers—demonstrate a rare balance of technical rigor and poetic restraint. Ultimately, the book reveals an under-recognized master whose work exemplifies thoughtful, context-driven design.

About the Author

Bruce Wrightsman is a Tenured Professor with the McEwen School of Architecture at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. He is a licensed architect with over twenty-five years of experience in the United States. As an educator, Bruce has over a decade of experience serving as instructor on multiple award-winning academic Design/Build projects.

Bruce’s research is divided into two areas of investigation. In the first he examines the pedagogical and social efficacy of Design/Build curricula across North America. In the second he explores Alternative Building Strategies where the architectonics of building has resulted in an architectural pursuit of reducing the ecological footprint of a building through material selection and alternative building approaches in relation to the site. Bruce has also been researching the work of architect Neil Astle, (1936-2000) and his innovative approach to design, sustainability, and craft.
